2008 feile
Blackrock vs. Piarsaigh
at Mayfield April 21st
Last Monday night 21 April Blackrock played na Piarsaigh in the Cork
Féile and a fine game of hurling was witnessed by a large crowd.
The Rockies lost in the end to the score 2-15 to 1-10, yet the margin
does not do justice to a fine game of hurling. Some astute switches by
na Piarsaigh swung the game for them and they proved stronger in the
second half, though trailing by a point at half time. They have some
fine hurlers and should do well in the competition. Andrew Murphy, Jamie
Ryan, Ryan Dineen, Cathal Cormac and Jew Logue played well for the
Rockies.
2008 feile
Blackrock vs. Glen Rovers
at Church Road April 13th at 6.30pm.
A large attendance turned up to watch this eagerly awaited Féile
hurling game between two famous rivals.
It took time for both teams to settle before Blackrock scored their
first point though the stick of Stephen Murphy from a free. The Rockies
had much possession in the first quarter, but were slow to score, before
Fiachra de Faoite scored a peach of a point. The Glen answered with
their first point by Mark Cronin who gave a superb display at Centre
Forward. His marker Jamie Ryan was in superb form and marshalled him
well. It was delightful to see two young players show superb skills of
hurling.
Two frees by Glen Rovers free taker Mark Kelleher kept the game even,
before the Rockies skipper, Alan Nolan went through for a goal. A few
quick points followed for the Rockies scored by Richard Dineen, Joe
Logue and Stephen Murphy. The Glen answered with a superb goal scored by
their corner forward. Coming to the end of the first half the sides were
close but the Rockies went through again for a peach of a goal from Alan
Nolan, having received a text book pass from Olan Hanley. Just before
the half time whistle the Rockies scored another goal following a
scramble in the goal mouth. At the break the score was 3-7 to 1-6 for
the Rockies.
The second half proved a quiet affair as the Rockies increased the
intensity and gave superb performance. Charlie O' Connor at midfield for
the Glen played outstandingly well, but despite his efforts the Rockies
prevailed. Mark Kelleher and Mark Cronin too put in superb performances,
but the Rockies scores kept coming. Andrew Murphy, Jamie Ryan and Cathal
Cormack were rock solid in defence and cleared their lines at all times.
The Rockies ran out comfortable winners at the finish by 11 points.
Team:
Olan Hanley, Kevin Ring, Richard McSweeney, Jimmy Burke, Alan Nolan,
Jamie Ryan, Andrew Murphy, Stephen Corbett, Mark Quirke, Stephen Murphy,
Peter O' Brien, Callum Crowe, Conor Cunnigham, Ryan Dineen, Fiachra de

Under
14 League
Blacrock
under 14 hurlers played Na Piarsaigh on Thursday 27th March in Church
Road in the first league game of the 2008 season. A lively game of
hurling ensued with na Piarsaigh exhibiting fine skills of hurling.
Blackrock was under pressure in the early stages and gave away some
frees which were expertly converted by the Na Piarsaigh freetaker. At
the first quarter they moved ahead by five points. Ryan Dineen managed
to pull back one point for Blackrock from a free. Na Piarsaigh then
scored some peaches of goals to leave a hill to climb for the Rockies at
the break; 4-5 to 0-5.
After
the interval the Rockies improved and managed to score some good points
from frees and play. Ryan Dineen was in excellent form converting some
good scores. Alan Nolan played excellent hurling throughout and Jamie
Ryan had an excellent game at centre back.
The
Rockies scored 1-5 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to make the
day. Andrew Murphy covered well at full back, but na Piarsaigh again
managed some good scores walking away with the league points.

Under 13 League.
Blackrock under 13s lost out to Douglas in the league by two points
in a game played at Church Road on Sunday evening 21st October.
This reversed the recent Championship result. Douglas had raced into
an early lead and by half time were 3 - 6 to 2 - 0 ahead.
While the Rockies put in a spirited second half they were unable to
get ahead and Douglas ran out winners. Alan Nolan, Stephen Murphy,
Andrew Murphy and Jamie Ryan played very well for the Rockies.
Under 13 Championship semi-final
Blackrock 2-7; Na Piarsaigh 2- 18
played in Mayfield on Sunday 7th October
After a good win over Douglas in the second round of the under 13
Championship, Blackrock progressed to the semi-final vs. Na Piarsaigh.
The game was played in Mayfield on Sunday 7th October. Blackrock started
very well but failed to score due to a strong defensive performance from
Na Piarsaigh. Na Piarsaigh then picked off a number of scores without
reply which left Blackrock chasing the game.
Blackrock were still in the game at half time and again started well
with a goal from Alan Nolan. Both teams were evenly matched throughout
and there were some fine individual performances from Andrew Murphy
(Capt), Olan Hanly who went into Goal for the injured Ritchie McSweeney
and Jamie Ryan who slotted into centre back when Andrew Murphy was
injured. However superior accuracy from Na Piarsaigh's ensured that they
progressed through to the final on the scoreline of Blackrock 2-7; Na
Piarsaigh 2- 18.

Under 13 Championship.
played in Douglas on Sunday 30th September
Blackrock 2 - 8 Douglas 1 - 3.
There was very little between both teams in this game for a long
period. Blackrock, who did not score from play in the first half were
somewhat lucky to be ahead at the interval following a rather fortuitous
goal from a long range free from Stephen Murphy coming up to half time,.
The interval score was 1 - 2 to 0 -3, all Blackrock's points coming
from Stephen Murphy frees. An early point from Fiacre White and a well
taken goal from Callum Crowe put the Rockies in the driving seat early
in the second half. With Alan Nolan, dominating at centre forward and
Stephen Murphy converting points, the Rockies pulled away. Adrian
O'Connell scored a great goal for Douglas, and with Brian Linehan
showing up well at centre forward, it looked as if it would be close.
However Richard McSweeney in goal for Blackrock was very solid, and
along with Stephen Corbett and Andrew Murphy closed down further
opportunities for the Douglas forwards. Referee Denis Bohane was firm
and authoritative in his decisions throughout the game.
Blackrock scorers; Stephen Murphy 1 - 6 (1 - 3 f), Callum Crowe 1 -
1, Fiacre White 0 - 1.

Blackrock 2 - 1 Brian Dillons 4 - 7.
Wednesday evening 27th June
On a sunny windy evening 27th June last, the Blackrock Fé 13 Hurling
League Section 2 team played an exciting game versus an excellent Brian
Dillons outfit.
Eddie Beechinor and Kieran Howick defended well. Darragh O'Brien had
a terrific game at full back and put in a number of very fine
clearances. Darragh O'Sullivan came on as a substitute in the second
half and made an immediate impact. Aaron Kennedy did some fine work in
the forward line
All in all a good brave performance by Blackrock against a very
determined Brian Dillons side

Blackrock 1 - 1 Cobh 3 - 3
Church road on Saturday 30th June
Cobh made the journey in for the Fé 13 Hurling League Section 2
match in Church road on Saturday 30th June. The rain held off during the
match but the strong wind had an undoubted impact during the game.
Blackrock played with the wind in the first half and were unlucky not to
get some goals. Michael O'Sullivan in particular and David Hurley at
corner forward ensured that the Cobh back line never had it easy and
David McElroy and Darren Dineen put in some fine clearances from the
back line.
Blackrock were unlucky to lose in the end and must regret some missed
chances against a Cobh team who converted all theirs.

Blackrock under 13s had a comprehensive victory over Blarney in the
league at Church Road on Saturday 23rd.
Under 13 League

Blackrock 6 - 4 Eire Og 4 - 3.
The Blackrock Feile team also had a comprehensive victory over
St.Vincents in a game played at Togher on Sunday 29th April. An early
hat trick from Eoin Smith put the Rockies in front and despite the very
best efforts of St. Vincents, there was no way back. The rest of the
full forward line including Andy O'Connell and Kevin O'Keeffe also
contributed to a great team victory. Anthony O'Donoghue in goal for the
Saints had a brilliant game and Alan Anderson, Anthony Harte and Wayne
Donoghue also played well. The Rockies now face Glen Rovers in the
semi-final on Wednesday 9th May at Bishopstown.
Under 13 hurling league
Played at Carrigaline Saturday 14th April
Blackrock 3 - 15 Carrigaline 3 - 5
Callum Crowe with 6 points from play emerged the hero of this hard
won Blackrock victory. Olan Hanly, Alan Nolan and Mark Quirke also
contributed scores. Carrigaline battled to the very end with Jamie
Depois, Killian O'Mahony, Robert Foster and Brian Lynch all playing well
for the South East side.
Under 13 league (2).
Played at Church Road,
Friday 13th April 2007.
Blackrock 3 - 2 Ballincollig 0 - 6
This was a really entertaining and highly competitive game with 30
plus young hurlers giving their all. The Rockies won the first half with
some great displays from Daniel Mc Ilroy and Darren Dineen.
Darragh O'Brien at full-back was unbeatable while Eddie Beechinor had
a fine game in the corner. The Rockies led 2 - 1 to 0 - 1 at the
interval.
The boys in green really showed they could hurl in the second half
led by young Stephen Coughlan at centre back and Jamie Kavanagh at
centre field. Padraigh Graham in goal made some fine saves also. Some
lovely points from Robert Noonan ensured there was little in it at the
final whistle. Brian Roche had an easy job as referee with two sporting
sides.
Under 13 League
at Church Road on Saturday 7th April.
Blackrock 2 - 8 Valley Rovers 1 - 5
In glorious sunshine at Church Road, Blackrock overcame the strong
challenge of Valley Rovers in the Under 13 league. Goals from Olan
Hanley and Fiacre De Faoite in the first half along with points from
Matt Bond, Alan Nolan and Peter O'Brien left the Rockies in a strong
position at half time when they led 2 - 8 to 0 - 1.
Although the Rockies failed to score in the second half they were
always in command. A brave fight back from the Rovers led by Daire
Murphy and Eoin O'Callaghan saw them close the gap. Derek Canty
converted a fine goal chance. However tenacious defending from the
Rockies defence saw them emerge ahead when the final whistle was sounded
by referee Denis Lenihan

Mooncoin Under 12 Hurling Tournament Final.
Blackrock 5 - 2 Ballygunner 5 - 1.
This game was played in gale force winds at Moon coin on Saturday 2nd
December. The victory represents and extraordinary achievement by this
1994 Blackrock panel. This tournament organised by the Carrigeen Hurling
club was a top class affair with 24 clubs in total involved. After 5
visits to Co. Kilkenny and competing in eight games against competition
provided by Kilmacud Crokes, Ballygunner, De la Salle, Gorey, Clonmel,
the Rockies emerged victorious on Saturday in the final of the premier
competition.
Playing with the aid of a strong gale and driving rain the Rockies
were behind the Waterford outfit by 3 - 1 to 2 - 2 at the interval. It
looked hopeless at this stage however throwing caution to the wind
(literally) the Rockies played the game of their lives to take the game
to Ballygunner in the second half. When the game eventually finished in
monsoon like conditions, Blackrock led by a single point to claim a
famous victory.
Scorers for Blackrock were Ryan Dineen (2 - 0) Olan Hanley (1 - 0)
Fiachre De Faoite (1 - 0) Sean Kearney (1 - 0) Stephen Murphy ( 0 - 1)
and Callum Crowe ( 0 - 1).

Blackrock
2 - 4 St. Finbarrs 3 - 2
Behind by four points at the interval, the Rockies put up a brave
performance before conceeding victory to a last minute goal from the
Barrs. Leading by just two points in the closing minutes, this once
again proved to be a dangerous lead in hurling as the Barrs rattled the
net with virtually the last puck of the game. Alan Nolan in goal for
Blackrock had a great game while the provider of the goals Ryan Dineen
was excellent. Other Rockies such as Conor Cunningham and Andrew Murphy
worked hard all through as indeed did the entire team which tried very
hard and can consider themselves unlucky after a very brave fightback.

There was
very little in this match as Blackrock defeated Carrigaline, in a very
competative game. Carrigaline were ahead at half time by 2 - 2 to 1- 2
however the huge contribution of Callum Stewart Crowe with 1 - 4
contributed to this victory as the Rockies dug deep in the second half.
Alan Nolan at full-forward, Stephen Murphy and Ryan Meally also put in a
big effort.

Blackrock
5 - 1 Passage 2 - 6
This was a very entertaining match with the lead changing on many
occasions in the second half. It featured some lovely ground hurling,
virtually a dying art in the modern game and some beatifull goals from
first time pulls from the Blackrock forwards.
Passage displayed some considerable skill with their well taken
points.
Darragh O’Brien at full-back was excellent for the Rockies while
Richard McSweeney was outstanding. Aaron Kennedy and Paul Lawlor with
two goals each emerged as the heroes for Blackrock in the closing
minutes.

Under 11 Hurling League.
Played at Church Road Sunday 8th May.
Blackrock had a comfortable victory over the youngsters from St
Finbarrs in this league game played at sunny Church Road last Sunday. A
good start by the Rockies when Conor Cunningham fired in a few goals
gave the home side an early advantage. Brilliant displays by Stephen
Murphy, Ryan Dineen and Matt Bond retained the lead for the Blackrock
side. Their ability to score points from various angles was the real
difference over a very good Barrs outfit who tried hard and were always
in contention. Edward Kenny, Jamie Burke and Luke Prendergast also stood
out in a very good panel performance.

Played in Lismore Sat. 7th May.
On Saturday some of this under 11 panel had travelled to Lismore for

the local team came out on top by 3 --- 1 to 1 --- 4. Everybody enjoyed
the outing and our thanks to the Lismore Hurling Club for their
